North Korea, officially the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), is one of the most isolated countries in the World. It was founded in 1948. Its capital is Pyongyang. North Korea has a centrally planned economy and a strong emphasis on self-reliance. Notable sites include the demilitarized zone, Kumsusan Palace of the Sun, Arirang Mass Games, and the Arch of Triumph. Interesting fact: The Korean peninsula is one of the most ethnically homogeneous regions in the world. The North Korean population, which has been largely isolated since 1945, is almost entirely Korean; a tiny number of Chinese constitute the only other significant ethnic group.
